The municipality of Vlissingen contracted Walhout Civil to conduct specialized investigations and inspections of the inner ports (Binnenhavens, Dokhaven, Vissershaven and Koopmanshaven). The current quay walls have fallen into decline and are outdated. In particular, the gravity quays and old pile walls are out of shape. Walhout Civil has implemented an effective maintenance strategy, in order to extend the theoretical residual life span of the quays. This strategy saved some millions of euros for new construction. We advised the municipality in the design of new quay walls, jetties, landing stages and fundations. A summary of our activities:
- Historical desk research
- Visual inspections and NEN 2767-4 Asset condition inspections
- Professional dive inspections and steel thickness measurments
- Bathymetric surveys and sludge / densitity measurements
- Geotechnical investigations
- Assessment of current quay walls
- Assessment of overall geotechnical stability
- Assessment of theoretical residual life span
- Consultancy of future approach and maintenance
- Design of quay wall constructions and jetties
